I gave up social media in July 2024. I was sick of Twitter and tired of getting attention.

But after 10 months, I decided to start again.

In February, I started a new social media challenge. 100 posts in 100 days on two platforms: Threads and Bluesky.

It’s been 30 days since I started this challenge, so now I can share my honest opinion on these two social media platforms.

Btw. I also post daily on Substack, but this platform is not a classic social media. I run my newsletter there, and Substack Notes is where I connect with my readers and other newsletters.

My challenge rules

I know that growing an audience on any social media platform is not just about publishing content. The most important thing is to engage and connect with others.

Here is my strategy:

  • write 1 post every day from Monday to Sunday

  • respond to all comments in 24 hours maximum

  • engage with a minimum of 5 posts from others.

Simple rules that require consistency every day.

Starting point

On both platforms, I already had some followers from 2024.

On Threads I had 38, and on Bluesky I had 23 followers.

But before that, I never published anything regularly. I just published random content and connected with creators I knew.

On both platforms, I started the challenge on Feb 2 with a small announcement:

To save time and automate the process, I created a free account on Buffer to schedule all my posts a week in advance.

Every time I have an idea for a short post, I save it in Apple Notes.

Then 2–3 times a week I move it to drafts in Buffer.

Every Sunday I sit down and move 7 drafts to the post queue. I set the publication time to 3:30 pm CET (9:30 am EST).

Threads vs Bluesky

Without further introduction, I’ll get to the point. Threads is the big winner here. I see much better traction with the content I publish.

Let me show just one example. This single post gave me:

  • 16,685 impressions

  • 23 new followers

Just short sentence + picture.

On Bluesky? Nothing. Zero. No comments, no likes.

That’s why I spend 99% of my time on Threads.

Even though I didn’t see great results on Bluesky, I still gained 55 followers (+32).

On the other hand, on Threads I gained 107 new followers with a total of 38.8k views ( Feb 4 - Mar 5).

And:

  • 9 reposts

  • 6 quotes.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find such detailed insights from Bluesky.

What’s next

Maybe I should do better on Bluesky. Engage more often and connect with more people. But on Threads it came much easier and faster for me.

I will continue my challenge (there are still ±70 days left!), but only on Threads from now on.

It’s a pity, because I still believe Bluesky has a lot of potential. But maybe it’s a little too early for me.

P.S. If you use Threads or Bluesky, share your account in the comments!
