It’s so easy to get lost with a side hustle. That can happen especially if you have chosen a wrong niche.

I know it’s tempting to follow current trends. To create a business around a topic that is catchy. Something that is trendy and everyone is talking about it.

But suddenly you don’t get any joy from it.

These could be signs that you have chosen the wrong niche:

  • you don’t feel a connection with your audience

  • you struggle to find new ideas

  • you are not engaging enough

  • you hardly make money

  • your motivation is low.

This can be easily solved

The solution is to find a niche that you are excited about:

  • something you are good at

  • want to explore

  • or want to learn.

So basically you have 3 options:

Option 1

Think about what you are good at. Is there any one thing you do much better than others?

Is there something your family or friends ask you for help with (because they know you are an expert to them)?

I'm pretty sure you can find more than one topic. And one of them can be your niche. Then you can share your experience online.

Option 2

Make a list of all the things you would like to learn. Then organise them based on what excites you most.

Pick one, start exploring it and share everything you learn on social media.

Option 3

Combine the two points. You don’t have to focus on one niche. You can try to find the perfect mix.

Something you already know + something you want to learn.

Here is my way

I have one main goal for my side hustle. Exploring different ways to make money online alongside my full-time job.

But I don’t want to just write about writing online and making money from writing.

Because of the side hustle outside the 9–5 job, it’s not only about making money. It’s also about everything around it:

  • productivity

  • technology (apps and tools)

  • personal finance.

And all of this, there are topics (different niches) that I write about.

This is why, for example, I launched my paperback book on stock market trading on Amazon KDP. Different niche, different target group. I did it to learn new skill.

So this is how I can summarise my online business: I help others find their side hustle and become more independent from a day job.

How you can do it

First of all, do brainstorming with yourself. Make a list of all the things you like, know or want to learn.

You can also ask your friends — ‘what am I good at?’. You might be surprised by what they tell you.

Write everything down. Even “silly” things that don’t sound great for a business.

You can create a list like this:

Choose 2–5 topics. Ideally, combine them all together:

  • something you like

  • something you know/you are good at

  • something you want to explore.
